We had a night to kill before we were due in Denham, so we headed south, with a quick stop in Carnarvon for supplies. Back on the road again we head for Denham, Monkey Mia and the Francoise Peron National Park. We are staying at the Denham Seaside Tourist Resort (Top Tourist $51 p,n incl discount and 2 kids @ $7 each) There is an air of excitement coming from the back seat as Eliza’s countdown to her 10th birthday comes to an end. Tomorrow she will spend her birthday at Monkey Mia (hopefully) feeding the dolphins. Other than getting her ears pierced (a week earlier in Coral Bay) this is all she wanted.
The McMath and Beer and Bere families also headed to Denham, so Eliza had a ready-made kids party, right down to the ice cream cake! The Bere family were staying at another park, but made time to come for a pre-birthday BBQ at Little Lagoon, as did the Beer family. It was a great location, with several covered BBQ areas, all with free BBQs.
It was an early start to the ‘birthday’ day, as we headed over to Monkey Mia to make the first feed at 8am. We squeezed our way through the anxious crowd of 300 people, and try not to seem too keen to feed the dolphins, as keenness is met with indifference from the volunteer feeders. There weren’t many dolphins in shore for the first feed of the day, and as we walked back up the beach, we tried to cheer up Eliza, who had missed out on feeding the dolphins.
After a visit to the gift shop, and a smile back on her face as she walked out with her dolphin key ring, we were walking back to the car when we heard the announcement that the next pod nof dolphins had arrived for feeding. Wow! Lize may get her chance yet! We wandered back down to the beach and listened to the intro again and were happy to see six or more dolphins waiting to be fed.
Not only did Lize get to feed ‘Piccolo’ the dolphin, so did I! That put the smile back on her dial for the rest of the day!
We took a day trip to Francois Peron N.P. with the McMath and Beer families. It was a great day but hard going on our car when we hit a sand hole going at a fair pace and ended up airborn. The bash plate came out of it a bit worse for wear! We visited South Gregories, Cape Peron and Skipjack Point, and dropped a line in off the beach but had no luck. A brief at Peron Homestead to wash off in the thermal pool was well worth the stop!
It was so lovely to be travelling with the McMath and Beer families again. It was great to be able to sneak off for some ‘girl’ time with Cate and Michelle. There isn’t much to the town of Denham, so after exhausting every shop in town, we headed for the pub. The boys were off fishing on the jetty and the kids were all within sight in the foreshore playground, so we had some time up our sleeves to sit back, relax and enjoy on some well needed female company. Thanks for keeping me sane girls – you’re awesome!
