Farewelling our friends in Denham, we head for Geraldton ‘Gero’ to stay for the last few days of the school holidays with our long time friends Matt and Allira, and their boys Will and James. It was lovely to park the van and move into a house for a while. Thanks to the boys for sharing a room while the girls stayed in James’ room.
Once we settled in and caught up on old times over some great food and wine, we headed off with Allira for the Cook’s tour of Geraldton. Not a stone was left unturned as we visited great cafes, book shops, lighthouses and museums. We visited Ellendale Pool for a picnic lunch and some kayaking and we were treated to a day out quad biking along the remote northern beaches of Geraldton. It was also lovely to catch up with my cousin Kaye and her grandchildren whilst in town as it’s been many years since we had seen each other.
But our favourite time of the day was always after dinner when we sat around the open fire telling stories and catching up.
Using Gero as our base, we took a day trip to Kalbarri to see the sights and visit the McMath and Beer families. On the way there we stopped at the Pink Lake at Port Gregory, and Red Bluff cliffs which have spectacular views both north and south. This is a great spot to do some fishing and whale watching during the whale season.
Well it was a stupid idea to call in for lunch with our friends, because it was incredibly hard to tear ourselves away after some good food and wine and some great company. It was almost 4pm when we did leave and headed to Nature’s Window in the Kalbarri National Park. This was another spectacular ‘Wow’ moment of our trip. It was incredibly peaceful sitting there with a stunning view out over the Murchison River. This is actually a great time to go as there was hardly anyone else around.
It was sad to leave Matt and Allira and family, but I’m sure it won’t be too long before Allira lures Matt back to Melbourne for some serious shopping. We’ll see you then guys.
